How We Make Our Prints

‘Wānaka wildflowers’

A year in the making. When I moved from the Garden city to Wānaka last year I initially missed the old streets and established gardens as we moved to a relatively new subdivision here in Central Otago. I missed the flowers from my old home in Christchurch as I looked upon a different landscape.

But then Spring arrived. I noticed tiny wildflowers popping up everywhere, some not always easily noticed and some could be weeds but I fell in love.

The flowers foraged for ‘Wānaka wildflowers’ were found on the road side, next to the Clutha river and growing on the lakeside at Lake Wānaka. These were collected over Spring and Summer, each one individually pressed & preserved when it bloomed and stored away until I had enough to create this print inspired by my new surroundings.

The flowers were then arranged on fine art paper and shot by a professional photographer in natural light to create an image that is then printed on premium Hahnemühle Smooth Cotton Rag 308gsm 100% cotton fine art paper (archival quality) using pigment ink with a hand torn deckle edge. A labour of love but the resulting print is beautiful and the shadows from how they are shot make you want to touch the paper to check if they’re real!

My hope for the print is that you can find a connection to Wānaka (and our surrounding areas) through an artwork dedicated to the beauty of our local Wānaka wildflowers.
